Adriel Angel

Adriel was an ancient Israeli nobleman. Adriel is a theologically significant angel that gave up his divine powers in order to heal a soldier who was mortal and also sacrificed his immortality.

Adriel, translated from Hebrew, means “my help is God”/ “flock of God”. Adriel was Barzillai, the Meholathite’s son. 1 Samuel 18:19 says that Saul married Merab to Adriel.

However, 2 Samuel 21.8, in the Masoretic Text records that Michal, another Saul daughter, “brought up five sons with Adriel.” This seems to be in conflict with 2 Samuel 6:23 which records Michal being barren. 2 Samuel 3 indicates that Michal was not married to Adriel.

Michal “brought up these five sons” has been taken to mean that she treated them like her own children or that we should substitute “Michal” for “Merab” in 2 Samuel 21, 8 as in 1 Sam. 18:19.

Many scholars believe that this is an error by an ancient copyist and Merab should have been read in 2 Samuel 21.8.
